OUTCOMES.
The project resulted in a coordinated oral-care system developed around the hygienic maintenance of dental implants and implant-supported restorations.

Developed two complementary tools: an angled end-tuft brush for precise access and a sulcus brush for controlled cleaning along the gumline.

Established a consistent ergonomic, visual and brand language across both products.

Considered wet-use handling, cleanability, durability and manufacturability throughout development.

Explored extending the range through a compact travel case and dual-brush display stand.

Designed the structural packaging, including the primary pack and internal riser, to organise and present the complete product system.

Applied design‑for‑manufacture principles and prepared the design for a smooth handover into production.
The result is a cohesive product range that considers not only specialised cleaning, but also how the brushes are stored, transported, displayed and presented to the customer.

EXTENDING THE PRODUCT SYSTEM.
The product range was extended beyond the brushes themselves to create a more complete experience across everyday use, travel, storage and presentation.

Travel case - A compact and streamlined case was developed to keep both brushes protected, organised and easy to carry when away from home.

Weighted display stand - A dedicated stand holds both brushes together and allows the products to remain neatly presented and readily accessible, rather than being hidden away in a drawer or bathroom cabinet.

Physical packaging - We designed the structural packaging, including the primary pack and internal riser, to securely present the products and accessories as one coordinated system. We then partnered up with our good friends at Haimish Studio, who then established the complete brand.

Development began by considering the two brushes as a single product system.
Rather than applying one shape to both products, each brush was developed around its intended method of use. Their functional differences were then brought together through consistent proportions, handle detailing, surface treatment and branding.
Key areas of development included:

Brush-head geometry - exploring the proportions and orientation of each head in relation to the intended cleaning movement.

Neck angle and access - developing different neck configurations to improve reach and positioning around more difficult areas.

Handle ergonomics - creating a narrow manual handle that could be held and controlled during precise cleaning.
-
Wet-use grip - introducing repeated raised details within the primary contact areas to improve tactility and communicate where the product should be held.

Visual differentiation - ensuring the brushes could be distinguished without disrupting the consistency of the overall product family.

Cleanability - maintaining smooth transitions and limiting unnecessary features within a wet and hygiene-sensitive environment.

Manufacturing development - refining the component forms with production constraints, material behaviour and repeatable manufacture in mind.
The designs were progressively developed through concept exploration, CAD refinement and physical evaluation.
DESIGNING FOR TARGETED IMPLANT CARE.
End-Tuft Brush
The end-tuft brush uses a compact bristle arrangement and a pronounced angled neck, developed for lingual transition brushing to provide controlled access around difficult-to-reach areas of the implant restoration.
Sulcus Brush
The sulcus brush uses a narrow bristle arrangement with a forward tilt for facial transition brushing intended for controlled cleaning along the gumline and the margin surrounding the implant-supported restoration.​
KEY DEVELOPMENT CHALLENGES.
Although visually simple, a specialised oral-care product must resolve several competing requirements within a very compact form.
The two brushes needed to:
01. Provide different head and neck geometries for targeted cleaning.
02. Make the purpose and handling orientation of each brush visually understandable.
03. Provide controlled access around difficult implant and prosthesis areas.
04. Remain comfortable and secure to hold when wet.
05. Avoid unnecessary recesses and potential dirt traps.
06. Withstand regular exposure to water and repeated daily use.
07. Feel like a coordinated product family rather than two unrelated brushes.
08. Present a specialised and premium alternative to conventional oral-care products.
The challenge was to make both brushes feel immediately familiar while carefully adapting their geometry for more specific cleaning tasks.
DEVELOPING Specialised Dental Implant Cleaning Brushes.




THE SITUATION.
the cleaning context.
Hi Gene set out to develop a specialised oral-care product for new and existing dental implant and prosthesis users.
The objective was to support routine hygienic maintenance around areas that can be difficult to reach using a conventional toothbrush. Rather than relying on one general-purpose brush, the proposed system would contain two complete brushes with different head and neck configurations.
Each brush needed to support a distinct cleaning approach while still appearing clearly related as part of the same product family.
We were brought in at an early stage to explore the overall form, ergonomics and functional geometry of the brushes, before developing the design into a coherent product direction for physical evaluation and manufacture.
Implant-supported restorations can create surfaces, margins and spaces that are difficult to clean using a conventional toothbrush alone. Depending on the patient and type of restoration, additional brushes may therefore be used to provide more controlled access around the implant and surrounding gumline. The proposed range centred around two complementary tools: an end-tuft brush with a compact head for precise, difficult-to-reach areas, and a sulcus brush developed to clean along the narrow margin where the restoration meets the surrounding gum tissue.
