CUSTOM INTERACTIVE PACKAGING DESIGN.

Custom packaging was developed with a focus on interactive play and sustainability. The aim was to ensure the packaging could be interactively repurposed rather than discarded.

In line with the hardware's educational purpose, the packaging was designed to feature activities and playful graphics that encourage children to unleash their creativity.

Further consideration was given to the unboxing experience, ensuring a smooth and intuitive transition from opening the package to assembling the product.

PREPARING FOR PRODUCTION AND USER EXPERIENCE.

Final development included:
  • Manufacturing-ready design documentation.
  • Packaging development and optimisation.
  • Instruction manual design.
  • Visual assets for marketing and investors.
  • Support through manufacturing preparation.

Key decisions that improved the product:
  • Reduced inventory by designing multi-purpose modular components.
  • Improved durability through geometry optimisation.
  • Simplified assembly for parents and educators.
  • Designed adjustable features to extend product lifespan.
  • Optimised packaging size for logistics efficiency.

DEFINING THE PRODUCT ARCHITECTURE.

Early work focused on establishing how the system could function as a cohesive modular platform rather than a collection of individual products.

Multiple configuration strategies were explored to identify the most flexible and scalable solution. Balancing modularity, durability and manufacturing.

The design was refined to reduce inventory complexity while maintaining structural integrity and usability.

Component geometries were optimised to:
  • Improve strength.
  • Simplify manufacturing.
  • Reduce tooling complexity.
  • Enable repeatable assembly.

Developing a modular learning system ready for manufacturing.

OUTCOMES.

The result was a modular classroom system successfully developed from concept to manufacturable product.

The product:
  • Exceeded its Kickstarter funding goal within minutes of launch.
  • Reduced inventory complexity.
  • Delivered flexible learning configurations.
  • Improved usability and durability.
  • Supported large-scale manufacturing.

The project was also recognised as:
  • Fast Company Innovation by Design Finalist.
  • TIME Best Inventions of 2022.

"We've been working with Val and Abtin for more than a year now. They are amazing and wonderful people, who are not only professional, responsible and prompt to respond to requirements, but more importantly have a creative eye for detail, able to translate ideas and feedback into amazing products.

We love working with them, and see them more as part of our team now.
Would highly recommend (:"

THE SITUATION.

KEY DEVELOPMENT CHALLENGES.

Out Of The Box Education - an EdTech startup originating from MIT - set out to create a modular children’s furniture system capable of transforming almost any space into an engaging learning environment.

The initial vision was ambitious: a compact “classroom-in-a-box” containing furniture that could adapt to multiple activities, learning modes and child growth stages.

The client needed support to transform the idea into a product that could realistically be manufactured and brought to market.
We identified that achieving a successful product required resolving significant challenges around:
01. Achieving structural strength while maintaining lightweight parts.
02. Designing modular components that remained intuitive for users.
03. Balancing durability with manufacturing cost targets.
04. Creating adjustable and ergonomic elements that could grow with the child.
05. Reducing part count without limiting functionality.
06. Ensuring safe interaction for children across use scenarios.
07. Improving brand positioning by increasing its perceived value.
08. Optimising packaging for shipping, logistics and customer experience.
09. Selecting processes and materials that are suitable for large-scale production.
Turning an early concept into a manufacturable, scalable children’s furniture product.
