THE SITUATION.

KEY DEVELOPMENT CHALLENGES.
This project explored the development of a chest-mounted rig designed for film-makers and content creators - providing a hands-free way to carry and access essential equipment during shoots.
We were brought in during the early stages to help define the product concept, focusing on usability, form/overall product structure and to prepare the design for initial development with sample makers.
Wearable products introduce a different set of constraints compared to traditional objects.
The product needed to:
-
Sit comfortably against the body over extended periods.
-
Distribute weight effectively to avoid strain.
-
Provide quick and intuitive access to equipment.
-
Adapt to different body types and use scenarios.
-
Be simple enough to manufacture and assemble.
At this stage, the challenge was not full engineering development, but establishing a clear and viable product direction that could be taken forward into prototyping and sampling.
OUTCOMES.
The project resulted in a clearly defined product concept ready for further development.
-
Established product architecture and layout.
-
Validated ergonomics and scale through physical mock-ups.
-
Refined concept direction for usability and clarity.
-
Prepared initial technical documentation for sample makers.
This provided the client a strong foundation to move into sample making and further development.
CONCEPT & STRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT.
The concept was refined around clarity and usability.
Key considerations included:
-
Ergonomic fit.
-
Ensuring the rig sits naturally on the chest while allowing freedom of movement.
-
Accessible storage.
-
Designing compartments and layouts that allow quick, intuitive access during use.
-
Balanced weight distribution.
-
Reducing strain by positioning components effectively across the body.
-
Simplified construction.
-
Keeping the product structure clear and logical to support future sampling and manufacturing.
While the product was not taken through full technical development, the concept was shaped with real-world use and production in mind.
OUR APPROACH.
Development focused on defining the core product architecture and user interaction early.
This included:
-
Exploring how the rig would sit and behave on the body.
-
Defining three distinct aesthetic directions to understand how the product could be perceived, used and positioned across different user groups.
-
Establishing layout and access to key storage areas.
-
Testing proportions and ergonomics through paper mock-ups.
-
Simplifying the product structure to support future manufacturing.
Paper-based prototyping allowed rapid iteration - helping to validate scale, fit and usability before committing to more complex development.
